at / in the office

Hey everyone, I have a question.

When do you use AT THE OFFICE? And when do you use IN THE OFFICE? What’s the difference between both phrases?

Thanks in advance!

The uses of «At» and «In» are generally not interchangeable, but in this particular casé, and after discussion with several other people at my office, at least here, they mean the same thing.

I will be «at» the office in five minutes.
I will be «in» the office in five minutes.
I am «at» the office now.
I am «in» the office now.

It means the same thing, and I suppose it is a personal preference on how it is said.

Thank you so much Ifeat. I actually thought the same thing but I came across a textbook that states there’s a difference between them. however, such a book does not offer any explanation. There’s an exercise in which you have to complete with the right preposition because, supposedly, there must be a difference.

Once again, thanks for your prompt reply.

I suppose that the difference they are stating is that being «at» the office is «outside» of the office physically, and being «in» the office would be «inside» the office, physically.

I think there can be some quite subtle differences here.
In my humble opinion:

Stating your own location:
I’m in the office=I’m at the office (inside the building)
I’m out of the office today (not working in the office today)
I’m outside the office (right outside the building, right now (waiting for you too pick me up!!))

If the person asking a question is not in the location, then they would probably use «at».
If the person asking the question is in the location, they they would probably use «in»

for example
Is John in the office today? (the speaker is in the office) It would definitely sound strange to say «at» if the speaker was in the office (especially if both are in the office)

Is John at the office today? (the speaker is on the phone and not in the office) But you could say «in», it sounds «ok»

Konungursvia, Jack and Ismael37,

Thank you all so much for your answers! They’ve been very helpful.

I was taught that:
in means inside the office, i.e. you are phisically in the building

at means either inside or outside the office i.e. you may be somewher in the office building, for instance, in your office room or outside the office building (for instance in a parking lot or waiting in front of it for your colleague).

So at seems to have broader use.

I quite agree with JackInMadr >door of a place (at the office, at the library, at home. ) or in any other cases a reference , a location point . For example, I wouldn’t say I’m meeting him in the square but at the square (square being a meeting point). In the other hand, in indicates an inside location where the speakers is. Generally open or enclosed space referring that you’re somewhere beyond the entrance door or within an open area. I’m in the square meaning you’re inside it. Which means that you’re probably saying this to someone on the phone.
If I’m on the phone in my office, I would say, meet me in the office.
If I’m on the phone outside the office, I would say, meet me at me office.
Which is more or less corroborating what you said in your example.
However, about your last example, in my opinion, if you are out of the office and you say is John in the office, I would interpret it as being somewhere in the office whereas I wouldn’t say he is at the office for the same reason that in my mind at indicates that he is at the door or he has just arrived at the office.
My conclusion would be that at would be used where you want to do something at a place (meet, have a party, etc. ). Whereas in is more likely indicating where somebody is. But please, tell me if I’m wrong.

Hi,
Dictionaries say:

at the office: when you are in a building that belongs to a company where people can work at desks.
Have a nice day at the office.

in office: an important job or position with power, especially in government.
She was celebrating ten years in office.

This is my question :

Yes. «In the office» is relatively common.

I will be in the office all day.
There is a lot going on in the office.
They rearranged the cubicles in the office.

The only time I expect to see «at office» is when it is part of a phrase:

at office parties
good at office politics
sale at Office Depot

What about :

1. at your office
2. in your office

Are both correct?

I will see you at your office.

Do they both mean «in the building where you work» ?

Yes. In the latter it is inside an office in the building.

Re: in the office / at office

Hello again,
I have completely understood these usages:
In office = an important position with power in government.
In an office = a building where you work in.
In your office = a building where you work in.
in the office = a building where you work in.
at the office = at work & general location

I remember some of native English speakers told me that they have never seen the usage of «at an office»
But on the Internet in one of the web pages I encountered it.

«At an office» is certainly possible, but it is not very common. The phrase would refer to an unspecified office. The blog title refers to favoritism in offices in general. A psychologist might be looking for an office in which to see patients. He/she might say: «I prefer to see patients at an office rather than at my home.»
